A. Suzor Post 4

"If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem" This statement stands true for me in large way. For example, lots of people know about the sweatshops in China making Iphones, though they still buy the product. These people may even be against sweatshops, although they have an Iphone, this makes them part of the problem. Though at times i feel as if it comes off as a little cynical. It also seems extremist to me.

In "Sold" Mumtaz pays off the police officers who come to the Happiness House in order for them not to tell anyone. Even though these police officers have not done anything to these girls or are in  favor of prostitution, they are still not participating in the solution which makes them part of the problem. So far, it seems as if even the people that know about the Happiness House, do not want to help with solution.

  1. I like the way you related Mumtaz paying off the police to the quote. Also, i think that the police are just part of the proplem of theses prostitution problems in India that contribute to the overall semi-corrupt government there, some places like the "mountains" women are treated mostly with respect and prostitution isnt happening in the villages, but if one travels a few 100 miles to the city, mountain girls are being sold and trapped as slaves. The police are just part of the problem.

  3. I agree in a way that if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. However, there are some cases where you observe a problem, and you'd like to help be a part of the solution, yet in some way you are unable to. For example, there are about 1.5 million homeless people in America alone. People with homes realize that, and although most of us would like to help, we don't. But that does not make us part of the problem. But I do agree that in most cases if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.

  4. I agree with you that if you are not apart of the solution you are apart of the problem for this case in the book. You chose an excellent example on how the police officers are visualizing the problem, but aren't doing anything, causing them to be apart of the problem. Also, for another example, there is a girl who lives in this "Happiness House" yet although her debt is repaid, she chooses not to forgo her journey on because living in this house is her life, and she hears about the people not helping her, and fixing the problem, which scares her back into her life of hell.
