Sydney Blixt Post #2

What is a human? A human is a person, what is a person? A person is a being possessing the power to consciously make decisions, have real deep emotion. Someone that has values, morals, and most importantly rights, is a human. A human has the choice, or should have the choice, to decide how they want to spend their life. Here in America we are constantly reminded that everyone is a human no matter what gender, color or sexuality they are. But what about, Iran or even parts of India, that believe women aren't human, that they shouldn't have rights? Women are people, and people are human. When someone takes away the freedom of religion, speech, from a person, they are taking away the freedom of life. They are taking away ones humanity. All in all, humans deserve the right to have rightsHumans want the those rights .In most parts of America, selling an animal for money or food is acceptable, but selling a human isn't. In most parts of India, selling a human might be looked down upon, but it is acceptable and happens every day, every minute a person, a human, is sold.
Imagine being told that because you have received your "first blood" it is time that you go to the city, away from everything you've ever know, to be a maid. You might be scared, excited, and maybe even hopeful. And then realizing that you were not sent away to be a maid, you were sold into prostitution. For Lakshmi, the main character of Sold by Patricia McCormick, and a thirteen year old girl, this is reality. Lakshmi is forced to grow up too fast and experience things that nobody, no matter what age, past, or gender should have to endure. Prostitution robbed her childhood, it robbed her of her humanity. But Lakshmi is a very smart girl, and I predict that despite all the bad and just disgusting things going on around her, she will find a way to make something good out of it, whether its a tin roof for her family or preventing just one more girl from a life as a sex slave. Lakshmi was not the only thing sold, so were her dignity, rights ,and humanity.
