There are a lot of adjectives to choose from that show up often in the book Sold. I chose the word violent. Mumtaz is very violent to the girls that live in her "Happiness House." She wont let them get a hair out of line. She has a strict pattern to her ways: "Tell the costumers that you are twelve, she says. Or Mumtaz will beat you senseless. Do whatever the costumer asks of you, Shahanna says. Or Mumtaz will beat you senseless." (141) In case that isn't enough torture she doesn't even let the girls use condoms, which leads to unwanted pregnancy and STDs.
