In in the book Sold, Patricia McCormick portrays Lakshmi to be a strong character. Even when she is sold into prostitution, she remains willing to do what she believes in even though it costs her horrible consequences. After staying at the "happiness house" for a while, she begins to do anything she can to get out of the brothel. She emotions become very detached in order for her to remain strong until the American comes back so she can finally leave. She puts up with this devastating thing that she is forced to do by focusing on how nice it will be when she is free. In this position, the hardest thing you could possibly do is to be hopeful. She is extremely brave to have to go through all of that and then wait for someone you don't entirely trust to take you away. You can see it in the book as she begins to keep her emotions deep down, doing everything she can to not have them show.
"I clench the sheets in my hands, for fear that I will pound them to death with my fists.
I grit my teeth, for fear that I will bite through their skin to their very bones.
I squeeze my eyes closed tight, for fear that I will see what has actually happened to me."(254)
