Anabelle Swezy Post #2

Being human can mean many things. To be human is to want, to need, to give, and to take. We all want things; in some cases that could meaning wanting a new Barbie doll, or in larger cases, wanting world peace. We all need things. Needing something could vary from needing attention, to needing food before starvation. We give things. Whether it's a birthday present, or giving your love to another. And lastly, we all take. Take someone's life, or even dignity. These are all actions that humans are capable of doing, for the good or bad.

In the book Sold, by Patricia McCormick, a young girl named Lakshmi is sold into prostitution. She lives a life stuck inside a box, but is still capable of being human. She wants to abandon her current life for a better one. She needs to be nurtured and loved, like Ama once did. She has to give herself to others, but she cannot stop them. Her freedom is taken from her, and she is left with nothing, alone and afraid, wanting to be free to live a life with arms wide open. She was oppressed and forced into prostitution by her step father, who only cares about his own needs. Lakshmi is human, but is trapped in a world of hate and tricks, and she is losing the abilities that make her human, making her wave her white flag to her new, terrible life.
