Ryan Meagher: Post# 3

Patricia McCormick speaks in a very naive and somber tone. Since Lakshmi, the protagonist, is from a small village in Nepal she is very unaware of how the world operates outside of her home. This allows for great foreshadowing because everyone is aware of her lingering troubles besides her. For example, on page 80, her captor, "Uncle Husband" gives her a treat for making it past the Indian border. Lakshmi gratefully thanks her Uncle and stuns the audience by saying "Next time Uncle is in a good mood, I will ask him where I can find a mail runner to take the rest of the sweets back home to Ama." McCormick does a great job of expressing how naive the protagonist is, mean while making the audience cringe. Everyone knows that there will be no return for the young girl.
