S. Lococo Post #2

One of the many things that make humans what they are is the realization that humans are not almighty. People are simply people, and they understand that, which is when they turn to a higher power. People beg for some almighty being to help them with their uncontrollable problems, whether it be a god, nature, or anything that a person feels can help them. Humans know there are some uncontrollable things in life, and realize they are not as powerful as they feel or seem.

In Sold, Lakshmi knows that there are some things in her life she has no say over; she knows her stepfather won't ever buy them a tin roof, her mother can't make him, and the baby might not survive another winter. So, as humans do, she prays to the Gods to help her with what she wants, to beg for help in a situation she cannot take over herself. When she says, "we honor the crows. We put out offerings of rice because crows are the messengers for the Lord of death" (39), she is indirectly hoping that the peace offering will get her a favor in return. Perhaps the favor is a good afterlife, or a brother who survives.
