Sarah Davidson Post # 3

In the book Sold by Patricia McCormick, Lakshmi is a 13 year old girl who is sold into prostitution. The author creates her tone in a dramatic, somber, and candid way.

The images she uses help describe her tone like when "Finally, I identify it. It is the muffled sound of sobbing. Habib rolls off me. Then I understand: I was the person crying (121.)" This is after Mumtaz drugs her and the author's language describes how Lakshmi feels. The way the author writes tells you that she is educated and has studied her facts to write this book.

The syntax of the book is short, but helps portray the tone. It tells you straight forward about what happens to Lakshmi in the Happiness House even though talking about prostitution is a hard thing to do. The story is also dramatic making you think what is going to happen next.
