Being human means that you can have your own life and or it is controlled by others around you. You can take the path that someone has created for you like Lakshmi does in the book SOLD. Or you can make your own path and do what you want to do. You would be able to choose your own husband/wife and it wouldn't be already planned for you.
In the book SOLD by Patricia McCormick, Lakshmi is taken away from her home so that she can make money and send it to her family. She is promised to marry a boy name Krishna but she goes with a woman that she calls Auntie and leaves her home. After a while she gets dropped off with a man that she calls Uncle Husband. They go on a journey to India where Lakshmi is taken to a place called Happiness House where it may seem that her dreams will come true soon but they don't. She has to has to obey her new misteress.
