What does it mean to be human? There are a lot of things that classify someone as human, working and following rules, having emotions and acting upon them, and making decisions for yourself. Humans also act with kindness towards others and forgiveness when someone makes a mistake. When these few classifications of “being human” are changed or not followed, people feel exposed to the harsh reality that occurs all around them. Sadly, in our culture today, these sorts of things happen and people lose their reason to believe that the others around them are trustworthy, and kind- and they end up not caring about what people think of them, or what harm they are doing to themselves directly.
Patricia McCormick, the author of the book Sold, illustrated beautifully what is is like to be taken advantage of and not believing in the society around you. Lakshmi arrives at the Happiness House and realizes that she has been turned into a prostitute along with the other girls there. All the girls at the house were stripped of their humanity and they begin to not trust the people around them anymore. Lakshmi was only one of the many girls who were beaten, starved and sold to men. When realizing what her stepfather had sold her for, she lost trust in him completely and she felt betrayed and worthless, completely tearing her life apart.
