Kest Post #2
I believe that to be human is defined by our freedom to make independent choices. The human race the the unique capability to alter its behavior and effect on its surroundings. For instance from the time they are born most other animals rely on their instincts. They eat what their parents ate, they do what their parents did, and they never question it. Never before has a tiger decided to eat leaves and snuggle with dear, however, as humans can fly, or even change our sex if we choose to. A humans life is remembered by the choices they make; choices an animal will never have the privilege of choosing.
In the book Sold, Lakshmi is mislead and ends up as a prostitute in an Indian brothel. Lakshmi has her humanity stripped from her them moment she is sold by her step father. By giving up herself to another person she also gives up her right to question and make her own descisions. From that point on her actions are not her own, but those of the people she belongs to. Without being able to choose her own fate she has lost her humanity.
