Some words that describe the tone of Sold by Patricia McCormick are somber and innocent. Sold is a story of girl who goes through mutiple rough stages while being humiliated by sex slavery. She experiences treacherous times while in a place called the Happiness House.
Lakshmi shows a sense of dread as she gets deeper into the city. Images from her eyes create a vivid impression on the reader. For exapmle Lakshmi sees a "city where the lying down people look like the dead. And the standing up ones, like the walking dead"(88). Her surroundings make her feel uncomfortable, making her miss home. A somber tone takes her over as she goes from being hopeful about her famliy to understanding the reality in the new world she is in.
Patricia McCormick's sentence structure helps back her up in showing how innocent Laksmi is. She says very simply "I'm going home"(105). She truly believes that she can just go home with a single statement. Because of the sentences's short length it quickly but surely says what Lakshmi innocently believes.
