Anabelle Swezy Post #3

In a story about a young girl being sold into sex slavery, you would expect the author to write the book in a detailed, somber tone. Instead, Patricia McCormick's Sold is told in a more informative and candid tone, but still shows Lakshmi's innocent emotions throughout the book.

McCormick creates intense images in candid word choices. The first time she was raped, could "hear, coming from a distance, a steady thud, thud, thud, and register that this is the sound of a headboard hitting a wall."(121) This was only part of a disturbing image from an innocent thirteen year old girl. Because of her innocence, she tells this terrible event in an informative tone.

The details used in the story are written simply but she McCormick adds specific adjectives to make it easy to picture in your head. While Lakshmi describes what she has become with "blackened tiger eyes and bleary chili pepper lips" she uses certain details such as 'bleary' and 'tiger eyes' that although are specific details, are used in an informative and candid tone.

The syntax of Sold, which has many short and brief sentences majorly contributes to the story's tone. Some sentences are written as if a robot is saying them, do to their simplicity. "He says hello in my language. I saw nothing in reply." (203) The sentences are very to-the-point, showing the candid tone in the book.

  1. I agree very much with what you are saying. Unlike many of the other posts you went beyond the usual somber and candid. You did use candid but you used, what I didn't realize until reading yours, was the adjective informative. You used good examples in yours explaining how it was informative. Others are how in the mathematics you learn that Mumtaz is lying to the girls about the money and how she is adding on more money than what they owe and subtracting more than she should, to keep them there. This book gives you this information to help you learn and understand what is going on in the world and how sick some people can get. To get out of your comfort zone and try to realize that these people don't and will most likely never get the comfort, love, and support that we have.
