In Sold, Lakshmi's ability to choose her own path is taken away when she is just 13 years old and sold into prostitution by her stepfather. The individual rights that make someone a human being were taken away once she got to the Happiness House. She wasn't allowed to talk to anyone there except Mumtaz when Mumtaz allowed it. None of the children were allowed to make any jokes. They weren't allowed to get an education and didn't have any books to read. They had a T. V. in the Happiness House, but they don't watch it when Mumtaz is around. . Most importantly they were forced into serving as whore for men all day. The only thing keeping Lakshmi continuing to feel like a human being is that she believes that she will earn enough money to return home and create a better life for her family.
The ability of the girls in the house to suffer through the pain and humiliation of prostitution is astounding. The only thing that keeps them going is the thought of going home, and even after Lakshmi learns that Mumtaz is scamming her (238), she doesn't give up hope.
