Being human has multiple meanings, it all depends on the person. To me, being a human means you do what you want. You can do whatever YOUR mind tells you to do. Some people follow, some people are independent. Being human, means we decide. If your a human you can figure out the outcome of your future. I am human. I have decided my future, or what I want my future to be. If you are human you can decide. We have our own opinion in many things.
In Sold, the main character wants to do something with her life. She doesn't exactly know but it is going to be something good. As she travels to all of the other villages and cities, she sees all of the other opportunities she has. She likes how people drive cars, and how big the buildings are. Since she is human she can do what she wants. She can be forced into something she doesn't like, but she can decide her own path.
Nick, I like your post. I agree with what you are saying and truly think that people should be able to do what they want and decide their own future. However, in some places around the world people are unable to choose their future because they are born into a certain class, or born as a women (i.e. places in the Middle-East where women have no rights). Wouldn't this mean that hundreds of thousands, maybe even million of people don't have the opportunity to truly be human. Also, Lakshmi does not have the option to do what she wants. The only reason she goes to the City is because her stepfather tells her to and lets her go to the city.
