According to http://www.uri.edu/artsci/wms/hughes/india.htm, "India is a sending, receiving, and transit nation" in international sex slavery and human trafficking. Hundreds of girls and women are sold into India from Nepal and Bangladesh, as is the situation with the main character of Sold, Lakshmi. Lakshmi's experience is a fairly typical way that girls are deceived into prostitution- by being told that they are to work as a maid in the city. As of the most recent estimate, 160,000 Nepalese females were being forced to stay in brothels and whorehouses in India. People trafficked through india often end up in Middle Eastern countries, Pakistan being the biggest offender.
