To be human can mean many different things and can be defined in many different ways. To me, one of the most important aspects of being human it to feel, both good and bad, bliss and hurt, and to have a say in your future. Every human has the ability to feel, from the amazing bliss that nothing can interfere with to the most extreme hurt that could be caused by a broken heart of distrust and disappointment.
The main character of the book was treated more as property than as a human. Although she thought she had choice, she was mislead as to what she was being asked to do with her choice. She thought she was going to the city to be a maid, but instead she became a sex toy or as some would say, a modern day slave. Her step father made a choice of selling her, which took away some of her humanity. It is not his right nor anyone else's right to take or make a choice in regards to her future. He interefered with who she was as a human and made a choice that took away or greatly changed her future.

  1. I agree 100%. Humans cannot be treated as toys, and should all have the right to feel, think, and do what they want with their life. Other, more selfish humans shouldn't be able to choose for them. Another example that shows how Lakshmi's right to make her own choices was taken away was when Mumtaz wouldn't let her leave prostitution, "You belong to me (106)".
