Isabelle Sarrafzadeh Post#2

As humans, we all have hope. We hope for security, happiness, and peace. We find these things in our connections with people, with the safety of our home, by the pursuit of what gives us joy.  These things look differently for different people, but there is a basic ability to hope.  We are able to look at our situation, our life, our day, and hope that it can be better, different, more.  Hope is to look forward and to envision what will bring us - security, happiness or peace.

In the book, Sold by Patricia McCormick, we see Lakshmi is able to keep hoping for a better life.  When she is sharing popcorn and a cigarette with her mother, they share their hopes for their new harvest and how it will change their lives, bring them a better roof, sugar for sweets, a new dress.  When she is holed up in the hut for 7 days, Lakshmi thinks of what her life will be with Krishna, the boy she is to marry.  As the village continues to pray for rain, Lakshmi tells her mother, 'maybe tomorrow' there will be rain.  They are hopeful.  Lakshmi is always able to hold on to hope - looking ahead for her security, happiness and peace.

  1. I agree that humans have hope. All humans have goals in life, they want to accomplish something.
