Elena Woodside Post 2

For a long time, many great philosophers have been trying to figure out what it means to be human. In my opinion, there are many ways to be human. Of course you must be mostly anatomically correct. But there are other trait you must carry on the inside. You must have compassion, forgiveness, and the ability to connect with others. There must be a drive, to succeed, to do better than others, which probably comes from our history of being primitive beings. Some people think that to be human that you must be greedy, and cruel. Others think that it is to be kind and understand morals. To me, the ability to be human is to be able to understand how to be all of that, and to know how to control yourself from all of that as well. Being human is to be a blend of so many traits and abilities. Humans are complex creatures that may never be understood. I think that having the ability to think this through and understand this is definitely a large part of being human.

In “Sold” by Patricia McCormick, the main character Lakshmi has everything it takes to be human. Mostly because she is one. She is very pure and genuine, which I think are great traits to being human. She is very naive about the world and everything she learns is thrown at her cruelly, unfortunately at the age of 13. She learns how she is supposed to be enslaved by a man, and she accepts it, but when she is taken into the Happiness House, she is enslaved. In the Happiness House she is forced to please men, but the person who has enslaved her is a woman, which I find odd. Lakshmi shows acceptance, and compassion which makes her not only a human, but a terrific person.

  1. I loved the description that you had showing how naive Lakshmi is. I agree, everything that she learns about the world is shown to her in a drastic and cruel way. Do you think maybe, if Lakshmi had grown up with a different perspective on life, with more money and more experiences, she would have, had more of her own voice and not gone through with the harsh treatment she had to endure? Being enslaved takes a very low self esteem- but I do agree with you that she is very accepting and she wants to please anyone who she trusts. :)
